This research work studied the influence of television viewing on adolescent, behaviour among public secondary school students in Obio  Akpor Local Government area. The research was carried out sequel to the need to determine the extent to which television can influence adolescents’ career choice, violent behaviour, dressing, drinking and sexuality. A questionnaire was drawn consisting of 25 questions covering the five research questions. This instrument was selected after subjecting it to a test-retest procedure that yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.72 when correlated with Pearson Product Moment. The questionnaire was administered to a total of 1000 respondents in 10 schools in Obio  Akpor LGA of Rivers State. The respondents were classified into those with positive and those with negative attitudes. The five hypotheses emanating from the research questions were further subjected to Chi-square analysis, while the degree of association or significance was determined by applying Pearson’s Coefficient of Contingency. The results obtained indicate that television viewing can impact both positively and negatively on the behaviour of most adolescents. It was therefore recommended that television operators should give more airtime to programmes that will impact positively on adolescents such as career and moral guidance and less airtime to those with negative impact such as most home video depicting violence

Unusual cause of subluxation of Austin Moore prosthesis of the hip

    Get PDF
Subluxation and dislocation following hip arthroplasty is a well known complication. It can be due to a number of reasons - varying from malrotation of the component, operative approach, previous surgery, previous stroke, loosening and high wear rates of prosthesis, infection to even patient behaviour. In this study, an unusual cause of subluxation of the hip caused by impinging tissue - prolapsed fat is reported in an 88 year-old female in a Northern England hospital. Post-operative check x-rays showed a subluxed Austin Moore propthesis. It was successfully surgically corrected. In a large number of cases of subluxations, no cause can be found. Re-operations have been found to be most successful when a precise determination of the cause of instability is made and appropriate measures applied.Journal of Science and Technology (Ghana) Vol. 27 (2) 2007: pp. 29-3

This study is aimed at determining the efficacy of using Moringa oleifera seed powder (MOSP) in wastewater treatment process (domestic and industrial). The effectiveness of MOSP was evaluated on the microbial and physiochemical characteristics of water. The experimental results of the properties of the treated and untreated water samples from industrial and domestic water sources revealed significant improvement after treatment with MOSP. The findings observed that generally, Moringa oleifera seeds treated both industrial and domestic waste water well as an alternative to commercial coagulating agents.  The study, therefore recommended that Moringa oleifera seed powder be utilized in industries and homes for the treatment of waste water and re-use. In addition, these processes are environmentally friendly and offer a wide variety of other benefits, such as reducing costs, reducing the generation of by-products, and providing greater biodegradability

Congenital Asplenia In A Surgical Patient

    Get PDF
Congenital asplenia is rare and could occur sporadically or less commonly as part of a syndrome. Sporadic or isolated congenital asphenia is not usually associated with significant morbidity. Congenical isolated asphenia can be present as septicaemia, commonly pneumococcal, hence the importance of screening the peripheral blood for Howell-Jolly bodies. Abdominal imaging becomes necessary if screening is positive. An isolated case of congenital asphenia is discovered by chance in a 69 year-old man, after falling off a ladder from a height of about 15 feet. Standard surgical procedure was followed in managing the patient. Here, abdominal ultrasound commented on the absence of the spleen followed trauma. Fracture of the spleen was suspected hence exploratory laparotomy was performed. To the best of our knowledge, this report is probably an isolated abnormality and most likely a sporadic case.Journal of Science & Technology (Ghana) Vol. 27 (2) 2007: pp. 1-

Evaluation of the concentration of toxic metals in cosmetic products in Nigeria

    Get PDF
It has been shown that heavy metals toxicity to humans is as a result of long term or high level exposure to pollutants common in the environment including the air, water, food and numerous consumer products such as the cosmetics and toiletries. In this study, we assessed the levels of toxic metals in different cosmetic products sold at local shops in Lagos, Nigeria. The cosmetic items included thirty creams and twenty lipsticks and lip glosses. These items were purchased from various shops at different locations in Lagos. The cosmetics were analyzed for heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and nickel) after digestion with concentrated acids HNO3: H2SO4: HClO4 in ratio 2:2:1. The concentrations of the selected toxic heavy metals were determined in duplicate using a Buck 205 flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. All the samples analyzed contained a detectable amount of all the metals of interest. The concentration of the heavy metals in the samples ranged from 0.006 to 0.207 ppm. It is obvious from the present study that the use of some cosmetic products exposes users to low concentrations of toxic heavy metals which could constitute potential health risk to users since it has been known that heavy metals can accumulate in the biological system over time and are known to induce skin problems or diseases such as cancer. Further research to better understand the sources of heavy metals in cosmetic products is recommended.Key words: Toxic heavy metals, cosmetics, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, environment

    Get PDF
This paper reports on a study of evaluation of online reference services (ORS). The paper focuses on the librarians’ perception of the evaluation of online reference services of academic libraries in Nigeria. The study was guided by the following four objectives: to find out the extent of application of online reference services in academic libraries in Nigeria; to examine the benefits of using ORS in academic libraries in Nigeria, to identify the challenges associated with the use of ORS, and profer solutions for ameliorating the challenges faced by these academic libraries in Nigeria. The study adopted a survey design which was employed to derived responses from 198 librarians. Data were collected from the population using questionnaire. The statistical packages for social sciences(SPSS) was used to extract data while the data were presented with the help of 4-point Likert scale, mean and standard deviation. The result revealed that e-mail services ranked 1st in the overall application of ORS. Lack of ICT infrastructure to support ORS ranked first as reason for non-application of ORS. Most noted benefit is that it provides more alternatives and flexibility to users. Challenges include: lack of proper training on use of ICT infrastructure among libraries and lack of funds to support ORS.Recommendations were made at the end of the study

Background: Maternal and infant morbidity and mortality are major public health problems in Nigeria. Although it is well-known that appropriate antenatal care (ANC) is important in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality, there is limited information on inequities on ANC seeking pattern among the pregnant women in Nigeria. Aim: The study was designed to explore inequities due to age, education, and socioeconomic status (SES) of women of childbearing age in seeking ANC services in Nigeria. Subjects and Methods: A household survey was conducted in 10 randomly selected villages in Nnewi, Anambra State, South-East Nigeria. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect relevant data from 420 women of childbearing age from the villages. The effects of age, education, SES, and ANC seeking behavior were analyzed. Results: It was found that 61.4% (254/420) of the respondents attended ANC clinic at least 6times. Although most of the respondents sought ANC in formal health, a greater percentage utilized private hospitals/clinics more than public health facilities. Age (P < 0.01), educational level (P < 0.001), and SES (P < 0.01) had statistically significant effects on respondents’ antenatal clinic attendance and choice of facilities. The highest SES group was more likely to utilize teaching hospitals and private clinics than other SES groups. Conclusions: There were inequities due to SES, educational level, and age of respondents in the pattern of ANC seeking behavior. These inequities could negate the achievement of millennium development goals (MDGs). Interventions that would address the inequities should be developed and implemented if the health-related MDGs are to be achieved.KEY WORDS: Antenatal care, health seeking behavior, inequities, Nigeria, women of childbearing ag

THE ROLE OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

    Get PDF
Abstract An institution cannot exist and function properly without the presence of a library because the services provided by an academic library reflect the quality of the institution. This paper attempts to present a brief overview of the concept of library, research data, Research Data Management (RDM) and its constraints as well as the roles of academic libraries. These roles has experienced new paradigm shift, unprecedented reshaping and alterations as a result of emerging waves of information communication technology (ICT) and its accompanying sustainable and disruptive technologies. Scholars are now producing, storing and disseminating digital data in much larger volumes than the text. The continued existence and access of this data is an issue, since the data is not stored in libraries. It is therefore crucial to preserve data for future generations. This paper tries to delineate the emerging role of academic libraries in Research Data Management (RDM) in tertiary institutions

Domestic dog (Canis familiaris), a well-known companion of man, is the main reservoir host of rabies virus and source of infection to humans in 95% cases in Africa. Vaccination of dogs against rabies is the most effective way of controlling the disease. WHO recommends that annual vaccination coverage of dog populations should be 70% and above for effective control of rabies. However, vaccination coverage of dogs is very low in most African countries, including Nigeria, where the global burden of the disease is highest next to Asia. The aim of this study was to determine and compare rabies vaccination coverage of dog population in Jos South Local Government area (LGA), Plateau State, Nigeria, using two survey approaches. Data on vaccination profile of rabid suspected dogs in Jos South LGA, were retrieved from records of cases presented to the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Nigeria, for confirmatory diagnosis from 2011 to 2016. Field data on demography and vaccination profile of owned domestic dogs were also obtained by face to face interview with dog owners in the LGA using structured questionnaire. Vaccination coverage of 4.9% and 19.7% were obtained for record and field surveys respectively, for sample estimates. Although average vaccination coverage was estimated as 12.4%, the true population vaccination coverage could be between 12% and 18%, (95% CI). The P-value (0.000) for association between survey approach and true vaccination coverage of dog populations in Jos South LGA was significant. Consequently, evaluation of regular vaccination by active survey is key to achieving WHO recommended vaccination coverage. Nigeria can only align with the world rabies elimination target of 2030 set by the WHO, OIE and FAO by active disease surveillance and enforcement of responsible dog ownership. Keywords: Domestic dog, Jos South LGA, Rabies, Surveillance, Vaccinatio
